The thought of the first New Tork Ultimate inter-borough track meet already has several runners hot under the collar. Manhattan's Jason Choy has limited himself to a diet of galvanized nails and unsweetened peanut butter ("It keeps my elbows pointy," he said at a recent practice) in an effort to take first in the middle distances. Brooklyn's Brion Winston has sprinted (semi-naked) through hospital corridors, prescribing amphetamines to his patients in an effort to pilfer a few tablets from every orange cylinder he doles out. And of course, up in Westchester, Marty Brutvan has been doing twelve hour plyometric routines in an effort to hold off his old nemesis, David "Vini" Hollander in the quarter mile.

What will be the results of this battle of the titans? Who will clutch the bragging rights in this fitness melee? Only time will tell, but the smart money is on Brooklyn, where ozone warnings and baby-carriage-hurtles have forced runners to overcome a new level of exhaustion. As the wise Elijah Hawkes muttered after a recent Williamsburg workout, "Ours is not to question why; ours is but to do or die...."

Keep your heads up and your eyes open. It's gonna be a bloodbath.
